The Role of Magnesium Oxide in Construction, Agriculture, and Refractory Industries

Magnesium oxide (MgO), also known as magnesia, is a white, odorless, and highly stable inorganic compound valued for its thermal resistance, electrical insulation, and chemical stability. It is produced primarily by the calcination of magnesium carbonate (magnesite) or magnesium hydroxide at high temperatures, resulting in a crystalline oxide that exhibits remarkable versatility across industrial, environmental, and agricultural applications.

In the refractory industry, magnesium oxide is a key material due to its high melting point (over 2800°C) and excellent resistance to heat and corrosion. It is widely used in furnace linings, crucibles, and kilns in industries such as steel, cement, glass, and ceramics, where materials must withstand extreme temperatures and aggressive chemical environments. MgO’s thermal stability ensures durability and energy efficiency in these high-temperature operations.

In the construction sector, magnesium oxide is increasingly used as a component of wallboards, panels, and fireproofing materials, offering an eco-friendly alternative to traditional gypsum boards.…
